Camp Herms Dog Patch Cabin Project

The Golden Gate Area’s Eagle Scouts have pledged to fund the building of one of six new cabins to replace old structures at Camp Herms’ Dog Patch campgrounds, part of the camp since the 1930s. The new cabins will provide shelter during inclement weather and expand Camp Herms’ programming capabilities, ensuring that the Scouting spirit thrives year-round.

Contributions Achieved

In order to make the new cabin project a reality, we need to raise $25,000.

About Camp Herms

Camp Herms is a nationally accredited Scout camp owned and operated by the Golden Gate Area Council, which was formed in June 2020 by merging Alameda Council, Mt. Diablo Silverado Council, and San Francisco Bay Area Council.

Located in the hills above El Cerrito, CA, on almost 20 acres of land, Camp Herms has direct access to the East Bay Regional Park District and is considered open space. Established in 1930 as a weekend camp of the Berkeley Council, BSA, it was originally named Camp Berkeley before being renamed in 1939 in honor of Council President William B Herms. He had appointed a special committee in 1929 to search for a suitable campsite.

Camp Herms is used for various Scouting activities, including Camporees, Cub Scouts, Order of the Arrow events, and BSA conferences. The natural beauty of the camp is also enjoyed by local hikers who explore its tree-lined paths and use the Lodge for community events and weddings.

The Camp Herms Lodge, built in 1931, features a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, a stone fireplace, and a presentation stage. A later addition, the “North Room,” functions as a meeting room and a history center.

About Dog Patch Campgrounds

The Dog Patch Cabins had been an integral part of Camp Herms since the early 1930s. This site featured six open-walled cabins, each designed to accommodate up to six scouts. In addition to the cabins, a covered shade structure and a campfire site were available for all to enjoy. For added convenience, a shower house and restrooms were situated nearby. Positioned above the ranger’s house on the south side of the quarry, the cabins were accessible via the path adjacent to the Camp Herms sign.
