The Boy Scouts of America announced the launch of the Citizenship in Society merit badge, its newest merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program. The new merit badge encourages Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting. Beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge will be required for any youth seeking to achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.
The introduction of the proposed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion merit badge is being delayed to allow for the careful consideration and evaluation.
The National Advancement Team has granted the Scout Executive the authority to grant a limited time extension to a Scout who foresees that due to no fault or choice of his or her own, it will be impossible to complete the Eagle Scout rank requirements before age 18.
